Module 1: Attitudes

Opportunity for Discussion - Final Reflection

Competency 10 – Be able to acknowledge and address values, issues and attitudes regarding alcohol and other drug use and dependence in:
Oneself
One's own family

It is a salutary experience for students to share their experiences with alcohol, alcoholics and alcoholism. This may be done in a plenary session as you end work on this module or it can be an assignment to write a paper that details the shaping of their own attitudes as it relates to their personal experiences, religious values, professional and personal concerns in their own lives and ministry. It is strongly recommended that your students attend open Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), Al-Anon and Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) meetings, and write a reflection paper about each of these experiences. This will provide an important experiential component to their learning and give them a better understanding of the impact of addiction on the individual and family members. The students should also be evaluated for any residual ACOA issues that may need addressing through therapy in order to become a whole and emotionally stable member of the clergy.
