While there are countless victories achieved by those in recovery, we cannot ignore the significant gaps that remain in our treatment and recovery systems. At the National Association for Children of Addiction – NACoA, we stand firmly behind the belief that recovery is a journey everyone has the right to take—regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. However, in this country, equitable access to recovery education, treatment, and follow-up resources is not yet a reality for many. There is more to do to help guarantee support and healing, and we can do so together. In the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Who is Being Left Behind?

People of color, older adults, rural residents, LGBTQIA+ individuals, veterans, and people with disabilities are among those who face additional barriers to accessing recovery resources. Children are so often the most forgotten – so often the first hurt in the family and yet the last helped, if supported at all. These demographic groups are often underserved by the current treatment and support infrastructure, leading to disparities in care and outcomes. Ultimately, without appropriate intervention, the intergenerational trauma related to substance use disorders continues to the next generation. The lack of culturally competent treatment, where services are tailored to respect and integrate diverse cultural values and belief systems, and the entire family, further exacerbates these inequities.

The Power of Culturally Competent Treatment

Culturally competent treatment is more than just a buzzword; it’s a critical component of effective recovery. When individuals engage in treatment that acknowledges and respects their unique cultural backgrounds, they are more likely to find success on their recovery journey. Unfortunately, not all treatment centers and recovery programs are equipped to offer this level of personalized care. This gap in services means that many people are not receiving the support they need to overcome the challenges of addiction.

No One Should Walk the Path Alone

At NACoA, we believe that no one should have to navigate the complexities of recovery alone. Yet, for those who belong to traditionally underserved groups, isolation is a common experience. In the spirit of equality, and for each person struggling because of the impact of a SUD, we are calling attention to the need for stronger support systems that reach everyone, everywhere. No matter who you are or where you live, you deserve access to the resources that can help you reclaim your life.

Everyone Deserves a Path to Recovery

Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Each person has the right to choose a recovery path that aligns with their values, life goals, and personal experiences. But for too many, the lack of access to diverse recovery options means that this choice is limited. For some, especially family members, they aren’t even aware that options exist that can improve their lives and heal from the trauma related to SUDs. To truly support recovery for all, we must ensure that resources are available and accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.

A Call to Action

Let’s come together to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable recovery system. With the right resources at the right time, everyone has the potential to recover and lead a full, meaningful life. It’s time to build bridges to recovery that span all communities, ensuring that no one is left behind on the path to healing.

NACoA is committed to standing by those affected by SUDs and advocating for the changes needed to make recovery accessible to all. Join us in our mission to create a future where equitable access to recovery is not just a dream, but a reality. Together, we can make recovery possible for everyone.

All People, all Families, all communities deserve access to recovery resources!
