It is important to talk to children age appropriately about the disease of addiction, so they can understand what is happening in their families. When parents stop drinking or misusing substances, or go into treatment and begin recovery, it is equally important to explain what this means, and how it can impact the family. Many changes take place, and often it is not the fantasy that the child(ren) has envisioned. These changes can be scary, and change the roles that children have created for themselves to find comfort with the chaos and uncertainity with active addiction. It is important to explain that while changes can be uncomfortable, it can be the beginning of healthier living for the person in early recovery, and the entire family.
