A Day of Learning About Addiction & Mental Health Commerce Township, MI NACoA extends our appreciation to everyone who made A Day of Learning About Addiction & Mental Health such an amazing event. On October 8th, Patrick Kennedy, American retired politician and mental health advocate; Dr Matthew LaCasse, Director of the Adolescent Addiction Recovery Center; and Anthony Grupido, magician and mental health/resiliency speaker inspired everyone who attended, and the positive synergy was infectious. Past CEO/Chair Emerita Sis Wenger attended the event, a wonderful opportunity to reconnect in an area where she devoted so much of her heart and energy to help the children. Generosity from the Shabro Family with Huge Hearts Wanting to Help In September, Shayna Sabro and her family graciously hosted a golfing fundraiser event in MI and raised $7,300 for NACoA. With huge hearts, this family wanted to honor the passing of her mother in a way that could help children who are impacted by family members dealing with substance use disorders. We are so grateful to this beautiful family for their effort and their desire to help children in such a meaningful way. |
NACoA ACOA Online Education and Discussion Group
These meetings are designed to educate adults about the impact of the disease of addiction on children, and how it can continue to affect them in adulthood. Through these presentations, adults can learn more about the impact, find hope that support is available, and learn how to heal from this impact and live healthier lives. How to Manage Your Child’s Pain & Prescription Opioid Use: 4 Safety Tips Sometimes, your child is in pain - or recovering from injury or surgery - and may need to use prescription opioids. When children have family members who have struggled with addiction, this can become a more vulnerable experience. Discussing this topic with the prescribing doctor, and sharing the family's history of SUDs is important. Healthy Children, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, has provided some helpful guidance for families at such times. Responsibly Disposing of Medications No Longer Needed Did you know that one of the important ways to love your children is by safeguarding medications in your home and disposing of them safely when they are no longer needed. It is dangerous to throw them away in the trash, and can have environmental impact if these medications enter local waterways. Each April and October, the DEA hosts a National Drug Take Back Day was held this past weekend, where dispensaries around the country receive these medications. Sometimes, people aren’t aware of them until the day of and they can’t get them medications to the locations on the selected day. October’s National Drug Takeback Day was held this weekend. But medications can be turned in all year long, not just on these designated days. If you have medications you’d like to turn in and missed the national day, contact your local police department or one of the 17,000 dispensaries available around the country.
