The movie Inside Out can be a wonderful way to approach discussing emotions with kids and teens. When families are impacted by substance use disorders, Don’t Talk, Don’t Trust, and Don’t Feel are unspoken rules that instruct children to not identify emotions and not to share feelings with others. By breaking these rules, we can help children heal from this influence and learn how to live in a healthier way. Through the movie, the characters jpersonify emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust (and in the sequel, Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui) to represent internal states. The movice demonstrates how these emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, are essential for a healthy emotional life and how they work together to navigate different situations. NACoA’s Discussion Guide also provides helpful resources for children of all ages.
